The great gig in the sky

Last night at about 8:30 I discovered that there was going to be a total lunar eclipse at 3:37 am this morning, and apparently it's a relatively rare occurrence to see one. I've never seen such a thing, so of course I came up with the bright idea to ride up to Cypress Mountain to photograph the event. Let's just say I'm paying for the missing 3 hours of sleep today.

There was a bit of wispy cloud cover when viewed from Cypress, which was a bit disappointing. The photos are deceiving, the brightness achieved through a long exposure time. At times visibility was zero, so I gave up and went home before it was completely over. Hey, don't think less of me, how many of you did more than peek your head out the window, if that? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Next total eclipse viewable in this area: December 2010. Brrrr.

Newsflash: Justafrog v2.0 finally launches!

Related: Scientists say Hell came dangerously close to freezing over.

That’s right people, I finally settled on about the thirteenth design overhaul and coded this baby up. As you can see, the eventual winner is monochromatic with lots of whitespace. I present to you the new justafrog.

This was a long time coming, I know. When I built my old site, its main purpose was to have an online showcase of my portfolio, and had no requirements as far as being dynamic, but as my interests and portfolio grow I’d like my site to reflect that. Also, sometimes I find I have stuff to say, and junk.

So, what’s there to see around here? Well I’ll give you a quick tour.

Work

Work is just sort of a catch-all for anything I’m doing that’s not just for me. This section is going to start off pretty sparse, as many of the things I’m most proud of at IBC haven’t launched just yet, and therefore I can’t give a sneak peek here. It may also occasionally include other things I do as freebies for friends and family.

Play

This will include pretty much any and all of my artsy extra-curricular activities, which hopefully in the future will include more painting. It’s something I haven’t done in years, and I’d love to get back into it. Lately I’m trying to flex my artistic muscles and stray from the things I’m really good at so that I continue to grow. I feel like otherwise I’ve kind of plateaued as an artist.

I also like to play around with photography, but I’m still really green and figuring stuff out as I go along. I do have a fancy new camera though, a Nikon D40X. You can tell it’s fancy, because it weighs as much as a cat.

I think the rest of the nav is fairly self-explanatory, so I won’t go into it. That’s about it. Stay a while, put your feet up. But dammit take your shoes off first.

Koi pond

This is a vector illustration, made up of thousands of shapes with different layer styles and opacities applied. The files got so ridiculous I had to build lily pads, lilies and the koi all in separate files and then join them.

Dali’s wild-eyed antics

I would already assume that one would have to be a bit strange to paint the kind of scenes that Salvador Dali did, but I think it's solidly confirmed by this portrait. I've seen his crazy mustache portrait drawn many times, but I particularly liked the strangeness of this image.

Barking up some kind of tree

These are two ink illustrations of tree bark that I did for my parents' birthday cards. I don't often work in ink so I thought I'd try something new.

Lawren Harris gets digital

Lawren Harris is one of my favourite artists. He somehow managed to reduce entire landscapes down to their simplest forms while still achieving a sense of realism, primarily through his use of dramatic lighting. And that is the nerdiest thing I've said all week.

This is a vector recreation of one of his paintings, "Mt. Lefroy". I actually did this as part of a snowboard design for Ride's yearly design contest. It even made it into the top 50, but of course all the credit must go to Lawren, I simply updated the technology on his already stunning visuals.

Ha!

It only took breaking my foot and being housebound for a long weekend to finally finish designing and coding this site. Now that’s motivation.
